Santander’s announcement that it will close its Whitehaven branch marks the loss of the last remaining high street bank in our town. For many residents, businesses and community groups, this isn’t just inconvenient – it risks cutting people off from essential, face-to-face banking services.
Whitehaven and the surrounding area deserves better.
That’s why Josh MacAlister MP – alongside local Whitehaven councillors, Emma Williamson, Joe Ghayouba and Jeanette Forster – has launched a campaign to secure a Banking Hub for our town.
What is a Banking Hub?
A Banking Hub is a shared banking space on the high street where customers from multiple banks can:
- Access counter services such as cash withdrawals and deposits
- Speak to staff in person for help with everyday banking
- Get specialist support on scheduled days from their own bank
- Continue to bank safely and confidently without travelling miles away
Banking Hubs are already helping towns across the UK stay connected after bank branch closures – and Whitehaven should be next.
We’ve got a strong case and the backing of LINK, who have made a positive recommendation to Cash Access UK for a new Banking Hub in Whitehaven – we now need them to make the final decision.
