Parents and carers from across West Cumbria are being invited to a public meeting hosted by Whitehaven and Workington MP and Children’s Minister Josh MacAlister to discuss the challenges of children growing up online.
The meeting will take place on Friday 3rd July, 6pm–7pm, at the Carnegie Theatre and Arts Centre in Workington.
It comes just days after the Government announced a landmark ban on social media for under-16s, following an 18 month campaign led by Josh to strengthen protections for children online.
The event will also mark the launch of West Cumbria’s Parent and Teacher Pact – a pioneering new initiative to help parents and schools work together as children move into secondary education.
From September, every family with a child starting Year 7 or joining Energy Coast UTC, Mayfield School or Branthwaite Academy will be offered free access to Triple P, one of the world’s best-evidenced parenting programmes. Triple P offers practical support on modern parenting challenges, including screen time, online safety, emotional wellbeing and building positive family relationships.
The Parent and Teacher Pact has been secured by Josh with the generous support of Sellafield Ltd and the 80/20 Fund and it will be delivered locally by Howgill Family Centre and the WELL Project.
